Tying Down A Tree
The AUGO Retractable Ratchet Tie Down Straps (4-Pack) ($62.99), made in China and sold in the U.S. by Selentino Hats, Inc., are just as their moniker states, a set of four, 1” x 10’ web straps in auto-retractable ratchets each rated at 400 lbs. load capacity and 1200 lbs. break strength. The set includes four “soft” straps to loop around vulnerable surfaces and a logo’d storage bag. An earlier listing, now corrected, erroneously also promised bungee cords.There’s a plant in our front yard that hasn’t grown the way it should. It’s a Desert Willow and is intended to grow as a tree, that is, with a trunk and branches. For reasons unknown to us, this Desert Willow was allowed to grow randomly. It was never pruned or trimmed, in a word, managed. As such, it’s more of a bush than a tree. There is no single trunk, just a disarray of vertical growths sprouting equally uncontrolled branches. We asked our landscapers to do what they could to give it a semblance of a tree silhouette. After trimming away most of the lower branches and even one or two of the “trunks,” they wrapped the remaining “trunks” in a strap to encourage more and closer vertical growth.The resulting visual looks like—well, like some kids danced around a Maypole and left the mess behind. I’ve wanted to straighten this out for some months, including adding a ratchet so we could adjust the tension of the strap as the weather shifted and the tree continued to grow. The AUGO tie-down straps have given me the opportunity by providing me the means.First came the task of removing the incoherent mix of strap looped around tree parts and wrap knotted in not only illogical but also nearly inaccessible places. Some of these appeared more to secure loose ends of the strap than to support the tree.Then came re-wrapping the tree with one of the AUGO straps. I used one of the soft loops to fix one hook to a stake while I looped the strap around the largest of the vertical growths, then around the opposite stake, then past another “trunk,” and back to the soft loop. Easing the soft loop out of the spring-clipped hook and clicking that hook into the other hook created a simple, completely enclosing strap with a ratchet in the middle of an open stretch of strap. Eliminating the knots and poorly placed wraps around parts of the tree that effectively immobilized the strapping and adding the ratchet opens the way for regular adjustments, both in tension and placement, in our efforts to caress the Desert Willow into a better-looking and maybe even more-resilient growth pattern.I realize this is not an anticipated use of the AUGO tie down straps. But it’s one in which the straps fill a real need. That’s enough for me.
