Product Description
This product helps prevent discoloration of pool water due to iron, calcium, manganese, copper and other metals and minerals which may be present in the water supply. This product is an excellent general purpose sequestrant which helps protect plumbing and pool walls from rust, stain and scale. It should be used for all pool openings and closings and throughout the season as needed. For initial filling of pool, if iron or other metallic contaminants are suspected, add one quart of Metal Free for each 10,000 gallons of pool water. Add Metal Free while the pool is being filled and before chlorine is added. To correct an existing colored water problem (due to the presence of minerals in the pool water), first close the pool to all swimmers. Leave the filter pump running. Stop chlorinating the pool and allow the chlorine level to drop to zero. Lower the pH of the pool water to 6.8 with pH Lower, lowering the pH will re-dissolve the metallic impurities. Add one quart of Metal Free per 10,000 gallons of water and allow the pool water to circulate overnight, or until the water is clear. Re-adjust the pH of the pool water between 7.2-7.8 with pH Rise. Begin normal chlorination and pool operation. Swimming may resume when chlorine residual is 1.0-3.0 ppm. To make up for loss of Metal Free due to backwashing and/or splash-out, add one quart of Metal Free for each 20,000 gallons of pool water, once each month.

It's been 1 year since I purchased this for my pool and the stains have returned. So this product kept them away for 11 months in my 15k gallon pool. I came here to purchase another 2 pack but noticed it's doubled in price since a year ago. I'll look elsewhere for a cheaper alternative even though I like this product.
Original review:
I was skeptical about this product based on the reviews but I purchased it anyway. My situation was that my in ground pool plaster (diamond brite) was discolored. It was a streaky yellow/orange tint that I couldn't remove with scrubbing and shocking the water. My water is almost always crystal clear so there wasn't any metal discoloration in the water itself, just on the plaster. Mainly the walls and steps. I live in Florida so I have to top off my pool with city water about twice a month and my city water picks up a lot of rust from the iron pipes before it gets to me so I'm sure that's the cause of my pool problem.
I have a 15,000 gallon pool so I added 1 container plus half of another and within 24 hours the plaster stain was completely gone. It's now been 2 months since I treated my pool and the stain hasn't returned at all. Not even a little.
Tips: Clean your filter before you start. Follow the instructions to a T. Reduce your chlorine to zero. Drop your PH and dump in the required amount of product based on your pool size. Run your pool for the next 48 hours straight and clean the filter again. When I cleaned my filter after the initial 48 hrs hours it went from a white filter to a gray filter and was kind of slimy. I assume this was the metals being removed since I've never seen my filter turn gray before. Now raise your PH to normal range, shock your pool and run your filter overnight and you're done.
I think if this product doesn't work for you and you followed all the instructions then maybe you don't have a metal issue in your pool. It could possibly be an algae that doesn't respond to copper or shocking it chlorine. For that you need a different product.
I'll update this review after 6 months of using the product and let you know if the stain returned. So far so good.
